The 7th edition of the Africa Human Rights Film Festival is returning to Cape Town on October 4-5, 2024, after its first leg in the Kalahari Desert. Held in partnership with the National Film and Video Foundation and Oxfam, the Cape Town event will take place at Bertha Movie House in Mowbray and the Isivivana Community Centre in Khayelitsha.
The festival, which features films, workshops, and panel discussions, will focus on environmental and climate issues. “This year, we will highlight the struggles of rights defenders who risk their lives for these causes,” said festival manager Davison Mudzingwa.
More than 20 films from Africa and beyond will explore themes of climate change, human rights, and the environment. Featured films include Zambezia: A Well for Change, In Your Eyes, and Blood for Oil. Local filmmakers and young people from the Kalahari, empowered through the festival’s support, will also showcase their work.
Climate justice activist Jacqueline van Meygaarden will lead a two-day workshop aimed at empowering creatives and activists. “The festival is about bridging the gap,” Mudzingwa added, emphasizing the festival’s role in equipping marginalized communities with storytelling tools.
The event is expected to attract a wide array of activists, academics, and film lovers.
