The Dundee July horse racing event, established around 2005, has grown from humble beginnings into a significant cultural and economic phenomenon. Initially conceived to foster rural social skills and development among previously disadvantaged communities, the event started with about 30 participants and 1,500 spectators.

Today, Dundee July boasts 500 participants and attracts over 25,000 spectators, including celebrities, top musicians, and fashion enthusiasts from KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Mpumalanga, and beyond. Attendees also come from neighboring countries like Swaziland, Botswana, and Lesotho. Notably, last year’s winner hailed from Lesotho, highlighting the event’s regional appeal.

Dundee July is more than a horse racing event; it is a powerful economic driver for the local community. The event generates approximately R15 million for the local economy over the weekend and creates over 3,000 temporary jobs. These economic benefits are a testament to the event’s importance in promoting rural development and economic growth.

Moreover, Dundee July is instrumental in fostering local industry. The jockeys’ attire is locally made, supporting local artisans and businesses. The event also features a fashion show, which provides a platform for local fashion designers to showcase their talents. By promoting local craftsmanship and creativity, Dundee July contributes to the growth of the local fashion industry.

As Dr. Tulani Vilakazi, CEO of Ithala SOC Limited, states, “Ithala SOC Limited remains committed to playing a meaningful role in Dundee July, recognizing its significance as a social cohesion program. He adds, The event not only brings communities together but also stimulates economic activity and industry development in rural areas.”

Dundee July stands as a shining example of how cultural events can drive social and economic development. By continuing to support this event, we aim to ensure its ongoing success and the continued growth and prosperity of the communities it serves.
