Durban Tourism officially launched its festive season plans at the newly opened Beach Café, with a focus on revitalized attractions, safety initiatives, and enhanced visitor experiences. The event, attended by stakeholders and industry leaders, set the tone for an exciting summer in the coastal city.
Among Durban’s prime attractions highlighted during the launch was the iconic Golden Mile, renowned for its sun-soaked beaches, promenade, and vibrant activities. Historical landmarks also featured prominently, including the Presidents House, now known as Dr. John L. Dube House, and the Natal Command, a heritage site rich with military history. The Queen Nandi Mountain Rifle, a popular hiking destination, offers visitors breathtaking views and a connection to Zulu heritage.
A vibrant nightlife hotspot, Florida Road, remains a favorite for both locals and tourists. Visitors were encouraged to explore its diverse dining options, including the popular Istanbul Restaurant, which boasts a fusion of Turkish flavors and a lively atmosphere.
Commitment from Stakeholders
During the launch, industry leaders pledged their support for Durban Tourism’s efforts to enhance the city’s appeal. Lindiwe Sangweni-Siddo, COO of City Lodge Group, expressed excitement about collaborating with Durban’s tourism entities:
“Coming here to work with such entities like your Durban Tourism and KZN Film Authority has demonstrated to us that it is possible. We want to pledge our commitment and participation actively as City Lodge throughout the season. We have had a major refurbishment of Road Lodge, Durban. That for us as a company is a form of commitment.”
Thabang Mofokeng, Deputy Chair of Durban Central CTO, emphasized the importance of safety:
“I wish that we could one day have at least two days, sleep in the city, and experience the nightlife of the city. I was assured a few weeks back that on top of the collaboration between SAPS, Metro Police, and UIP (Urban Integrated Precinct), there is a significant commitment to ensure we have a safer Durban.”
Enhanced Safety Measures
Colonel Boysie Zungu, representing Durban Metro Police, reassured attendees of the city’s readiness to handle the influx of holidaymakers:
“Our metro police are ready. We have introduced a new unit called the coastal and tourist unit that will specifically ensure that tourist areas are safe. We have received 198 new vehicles to perform our duties efficiently. On the 9th, we’re expecting 580 new police officers. One is proud to say our safety plan is ready, and we’ll ensure everyone coming to Durban is safe.”
With comprehensive safety measures in place, revitalized attractions, and a renewed commitment from stakeholders, Durban Tourism is ready to offer an unforgettable festive season for all.
