Empowering Youth: Public Works and AgriSeta Open Doors to Diverse Career Paths

Director General of Public Works,Sifiso Mdakane at Isibonelo High School during their outreach program. Here he was talking about the importance of mathematics as a subject.

In a bid to spark interest in fields vital to South Africa’s development, the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI), under Director General Sifiso Mdakane, hosted a significant outreach programme at Isibonelo High School in KwaMashu, KwaZulu-Natal. This initiative aimed to introduce high school students to career opportunities within public works and the agricultural sector. Learners were exposed to an array of professions, bursary prospects, and learnership pathways, connecting them with a future rich in possibilities.

“We are encouraging the learners to study mathematics in order to assist the state in terms of rolling out infrastructure development. As we know the Minister has been speaking about the infrastructure driven growth, we cannot do that if we don’t start from schools like Isibonelo High School.” said Mdakane

“As Public Works and the custodians of government property we are really proud to have come to the school ,we are really encouraged by the principal who guaranteed us 96% of the class of 2024.” he added

Pathways in Public Works: Building Strong Communities

Public works careers encompass a variety of roles responsible for shaping and maintaining South Africa’s infrastructure. Through the programme, DPWI representatives highlighted professions that directly impact community life, including:

Civil Engineering: Civil engineers play a crucial role in the design and maintenance of infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and water systems. This role, essential to urban development, requires strong analytical skills and a background in science and mathematics.

Environmental Management: With an increasing focus on sustainability, environmental managers work to mitigate the ecological impact of construction projects. This career combines environmental science with planning, helping South Africa balance development with conservation efforts.

Urban and Regional Planning: Urban planners shape the functional and aesthetic aspects of communities. By analyzing land use, zoning, and economic impacts, they ensure that spaces meet the social and economic needs of residents while supporting sustainable growth.

Project Management: Project managers oversee every phase of infrastructure projects, from planning to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget. This role requires strong leadership, time management, and problem-solving skills.

Quantity Surveying: Quantity surveyors focus on the cost management of construction projects. They estimate costs, procure resources, and manage project budgets, making this a vital role for financially sustainable development.

Going forward,as the Director General of Public Works I will be signing a contract with the school principal in terms of supporting him in all his efforts that he’s making to bring learners that are interested and aspiring to be engineers. ,he adds

Exploring AgriSeta: A Future in Agriculture and Sustainability

With agriculture being a cornerstone of South Africa’s economy, AgriSeta highlighted career paths within this diverse sector. From food production to innovative technology, agriculture offers a range of fulfilling careers that contribute to food security and environmental health.

Agricultural Engineering: Agricultural engineers design machinery and processes to increase farming efficiency and productivity. This field requires a blend of engineering and environmental science, making it ideal for those who enjoy hands-on problem-solving.

Farm Management: Farm managers are responsible for the daily operations of farms, overseeing everything from crop production to livestock care. This role offers a balance of strategic planning and practical experience in agriculture.

Agricultural Science and Research: Professionals in agricultural science focus on developing sustainable farming practices. They contribute to crop improvement, pest control, and soil health, essential to tackling global food challenges.

Veterinary Services: Working within the agricultural sector, veterinarians and technicians ensure the health of livestock, which is critical for successful farming. This career is well-suited for those passionate about animal welfare.

Food Processing and Quality Control: This field ensures that food products meet health and safety standards before reaching consumers. Roles in quality control and supply chain management are essential for maintaining high standards within the food industry.

Support for Aspiring Professionals: Bursaries and Learnerships

To make these careers more accessible, DPWI and AgriSeta introduced learners to various bursary and learnership opportunities. Representatives from Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) explained the application process and eligibility criteria, opening doors for students who might otherwise face financial barriers in pursuing further education.

Building a Skilled Future Workforce

The outreach programme at Isibonelo High School connected students with insights and resources to guide their future career choices. By fostering awareness of public works and agriculture, the DPWI and AgriSeta aim to inspire a generation of skilled professionals who will contribute to South Africa’s economic growth and sustainability. Through these types of engagements, young South Africans are empowered to make informed decisions about their future, building careers that serve both community and country.

Don Masinga ,who is a business man and former Isibonelo High School learner was also there to motivate the learners into these fields of engineering. He said, “We always need to remember who we are and where we come from. Remember that hope is the key that unlocks the doors.”
