EThekwini Municipality has announced additional safety and security measures ahead of the highly anticipated MTN 8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch United, scheduled for Saturday, 5 October. The City is preparing to host over 60,000 fans for the event at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The safety plans were revealed during a media briefing at Coastlands Skye Hotel in Umhlanga on 3 October. This marks the 10th time since 2010 that eThekwini has been selected as the host city for the MTN 8 final.
Metro Police Spokesperson, Colonel Boysie Zungu, stated that while no road closures are planned, traffic officials will be stationed at key intersections surrounding the stadium to manage congestion. “Extra safety and security measures are being taken by the City ahead of the MTN 8 clash. Working with the stadium management, we have secured additional parking bays and areas for fans,” said Zungu.
The Head of Stadia, Dr. Vusi Mazibuko, praised the strong ticket sales, which he said reflect confidence in the City’s capability to host high-profile events. “This is the second fastest tickets have sold for a game at the stadium, only behind the 2014 Kaizer Chiefs vs Orlando Pirates MTN 8 fixture. The City has demonstrated on various occasions that we are capable of hosting big tournaments. EThekwini boasts world-class facilities and remains ready to host mega events as they have a positive impact on the economy,” Mazibuko commented.
The Metro Police, Moses Mabhida Stadium management, South African Police Service, MTN, and the Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa are working closely to ensure the final runs smoothly, ensuring safety for all attendees.
