Man critically hurt in La Lucia substation fire

La Lucia – A 29-year-old man is being treated for severe burn wounds following a fire at an electricity substation in William Campbell Drive in La Lucia, north of Durban.

Paramedics and firefighters raced to the scene at about 12.45pm after receiving reports that a man was on fire in the road.

He is understood to have run about 60 metres down the road away from the substation.

Crisis Medical’s Kyle van Reenen says the man sustained 100 percent burns to his body and is in a critical condition.

Paramedics treated him on scene before he was taken to hospital by ambulance for further care.

Van Reenen says initial indications are that the man may have been sleeping in the substation.

“It is unknown at present as to what caused the fire.”

He said the necessary authorities were on scene and will be investigating the incident further.

Some of grassed area around the substation also caught alight.

Nearby homes have been left without electricity.
