Minister Mchunu Warns of Deadly Construction Rivalries: ‘More Lethal Than Politics’

Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu during a summit at ICC today.

The Minister of Police in South Africa, Mr. Senzo Mchunu, has issued a stern warning to police officers involved in criminal activities.

Mchunu made this statement during a summit on crime prevention, organized by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban today. He urged police officers who engage in criminal behavior to choose a side: “I ask those police officers who are straddling the line between law enforcement and crime to choose one path. They know what will happen to them if they choose crime – we will arrest them. Right now, we are actively working to root out corrupt officers,” said Mchunu.

Addressing the rise in construction-related crimes plaguing KwaZulu-Natal, the Minister noted that four provinces were leading in this type of crime: KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Eastern Cape, and Western Cape. He assured the public that law enforcement was working tirelessly to combat these issues.

Mchunu also emphasized the growing danger within the construction industry, stating, “The rivalry of people in construction is more lethal than those in politics.” He issued a stark warning to those involved in disrupting infrastructure development, particularly the notorious “Construction Mafia.”

“We have seen these individuals, who disrupt infrastructure projects, becoming bolder and even fighting with the police. What I want to say to them is this: I wish all those who attack the police good luck. If they continue with their actions, they will soon realize who they are truly aligned with,” Mchunu concluded.
