Pinetown driver shoots hijacker dead, another killed in Hillcrest robbery

crime scene

A motorist has shot and killed a man and wounded another, while they were allegedly trying to hijack him in Pinetown.

The police’s Thulani Zwane says the man had been sitting in his car at the corner of Anderson and Josiah Gumede Road on Monday morning when he was approached.

“It is alleged that the two suspects attempted to hijack him by threatening him with a knife. The victim allegedly pulled out his firearm and allegedly shot at one suspect and he died instantly,” Zwane said.

Zwane says the second wounded suspect fled and is still on the run.

The incident took place just a few hours after a suspected robber was shot dead in a gun battle with police in Hillcrest.

Police say two patrolling officers stopped outside a shop on Sunday night, unaware that a robbery was in progress at a nearby tavern.

One of the officers was accosted by three fleeing suspects and robbed of his pistol.

The officers pursued them as they sped away.

The suspects abandoned their getaway vehicle during an exchange of fire, and tried to flee on foot.

One of the robbers was killed, the second wounded while the third was later arrested.

Police say liquor and cigarettes believed to have been stolen from the tavern were recovered from the vehicle – along with an unlicensed firearm.
