eThekwini Deputy Mayor Councillor Zandile Myeni announced measures to assist residents affected by recent inclement weather during a visit to Clairwood on 22 October. Severe weather in the area caused injuries and destroyed informal structures, leaving many vulnerable.
Accompanied by senior municipal management, government officials, and non-profit organisations, Deputy Mayor Myeni highlighted the importance of the visit. “Clairwood is one of the areas most affected, and we are here to assess the damage.”
The City, alongside other government spheres, plans to secure land for decent housing to reduce the number of informal settlements, which are particularly vulnerable to extreme weather. Myeni urged residents to cooperate with the Municipality as temporary housing solutions are developed.
“The Municipality’s emergency services will continue to provide the necessary support to affected residents in this area,” she added.
A Disaster Management assessment is underway, with a report to be presented to the Council. Myeni praised the Al-Imdaad Foundation for their ongoing support, while local resident Bukelwa Kewu expressed gratitude for the assistance received since the storm.
