On September 2, 2024, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa embarked on a significant state visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. This visit marked a pivotal moment in the relationship between the two nations, culminating in the establishment of an “All-Round Strategic Cooperative Partnership in a New Era.”

During their discussions, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the China-South Africa relationship, which has flourished over the past 26 years. “Our partnership has seen leapfrog development, becoming a model of cooperation for developing nations,” President Ramaphosa stated. President Xi echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the partnership reflects the growing global significance and strategic influence of their relationship.

Key areas of cooperation discussed included enhancing economic ties, with a focus on aligning China’s Belt and Road Initiative with South Africa’s National Development Plan. The leaders agreed to expand trade and investment, particularly in value-added goods and new technology sectors. “We are committed to creating a prosperous future through balanced trade and accelerated economic growth,” said President Ramaphosa.

The visit also underscored the countries’ shared vision on global issues. Both leaders expressed their support for reforms in international governance, aiming to make global institutions more democratic and representative. They also discussed collaboration on initiatives such as climate change, poverty alleviation, and conflict resolution, with President Ramaphosa noting, “Our countries stand united in promoting global peace, security, and development.”

The visit concluded with the signing of several bilateral agreements, including those on trade, cultural heritage, and technology. President Ramaphosa expressed his gratitude to President Xi and the Chinese people, describing the visit as a “great success in advancing our shared goals and strengthening China-South Africa relations.”
