City of eThekwini continues its commitment to affordable housing with significant strides in key Community Residential Unit (CRU) projects across the municipality. Chairperson of the Human Settlements, Engineering, and Transport Authority Committee, Councillor Themba Mvubu, visited three major sites—Donnelly Road, KwaMakhutha, and uMlazi T-Section—today to oversee developments and address potential challenges.

These projects, together valued at over R111 million, reflect the city’s dedication to increasing affordable housing. At Donnelly Road, bordering Wentworth and the Bluff, construction is now 80% complete on the R52 million project. Set to provide 128 housing units upon completion, it marks a critical milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to serve the community’s housing needs.

“The progress here is impressive,” noted Councillor Mvubu. “This project, like others, underscores the city’s commitment to affordable, quality housing, ensuring families can secure decent accommodations without relocating far from their communities.”

Despite some minor obstacles in uMlazi T-Section, Councillor Mvubu expressed confidence in the project’s momentum. “The contractor has assured us of substantial progress by early December, with two of nine blocks nearing completion on the ground floor,” he explained. These units are expected to provide a significant boost to local housing availability and community cohesion.

KwaMakhutha’s CRU project stands out as another success story. Here, work has advanced smoothly, and the contractor is on track to complete the project by the end of November. Councillor Mvubu emphasized the importance of regular oversight, noting that it goes beyond financial checks to ensure quality and alignment with project specifications.

“Council’s oversight is essential, not only to monitor spending but to guarantee that projects meet standards and stay on course,” he said. “It is our responsibility as leaders to intervene proactively whenever challenges emerge.”

As eThekwini continues to make strides in affordable housing, these CRU projects exemplify the city’s dedication to sustainable and community-centered development that benefits residents directly.
