uMgungundlovu District Municipality Mayor, Cllr. Mzi Zuma, recently hosted an insightful engagement session with journalists at Thurlow House, Midmar Dam, Howick. The session served as an opportunity to reflect on the achievements and milestones of the 2024/2025 fiscal year.

Mayor Zuma, opened the event by expressing appreciation for journalists’ role in fostering transparency and public accountability. “Your dedication to informing our communities is invaluable. I urge you to continue pursuing excellence in your craft,” he remarked.

Major Milestones Highlighted

Mpolweni Water Supply Scheme

This project, located in Ward 10 of Mshwathi Local Municipality, was expanded to benefit 2,891 households, exceeding the initial target of 2,712. “The project is now 100% complete and ready for handover,” Mayor Zuma stated.

Nhlabamasoka, Nhlathimbe, and Khathikhulu Water Supply Project

Serving over 4,500 people in Impendle Local Municipality, this project includes a secondary bulk pipeline and reticulation system. With the inception phase finalized, the project also promises 150 job opportunities.

Sanitation for uMngeni Local Municipality

Aimed at Ward 5 of Impendle Local Municipality, 114 VIP sanitation units were constructed, coupled with health and hygiene education for community members.

Recognition and Financial Stewardship

Mayor Zuma celebrated the district’s firefighters, who earned medals in the Toughest Firefighter Alive South Africa competition. “Their dedication is a testament to our district’s excellence,” he said.

On the economic front, he revealed a R5 million allocation to support SMMEs and informal businesses, with beneficiaries soon receiving support vouchers. He also proudly announced the Municipality’s unqualified audit, emphasizing its sound financial governance.

Concluding, Mayor Zuma reaffirmed the Municipality’s commitment to service delivery and economic growth: “We remain focused on fostering prosperity for all residents of uMgungundlovu District.”
