A team of highly skilled personnel has been deployed to assess parts of the Southern Aqueduct following a drastic reduction in water inflow to some areas in the south and central regions.

The 24km Southern Aqueduct conveys potable water from uMngeni-uThukela’s Durban Heights Water Treatment Works to 26 reservoirs in these areas. The Water Treatment Works has been experiencing an increase in demand, exacerbated by the ongoing heatwave.

“The increase in water demand has resulted in low pressure, leading to no water supply in critical points across all supply systems,” the Municipality stated. “This includes the tail end of each system and high-level zones.”

According to uMngeni-uThukela Water’s Monitoring Centre, daily demand in the Southern Aqueduct currently exceeds supply by approximately 100 megalitres per day.

To stabilize the system, the Municipality is implementing several measures, including identifying and repairing leaks, checking and replacing faulty control valves, and inspecting meters for necessary repairs or replacements. Additionally, pressure in the system is being lowered to reduce water loss, and restrictors are being installed to help reservoirs manage demand.

“The Municipality will also be rationing the available water to ensure equal distribution to all affected areas,” the statement added.

As a short-term intervention, water tankers continue to supply affected residents until the system recovers.

Recognizing the ongoing water challenges in some south and central network areas due to rapid urbanization, the City has already commenced upgrading the Southern Aqueduct. “The upgrade, which began in early 2024, includes constructing a new pipeline and repairing the existing line. This project will significantly improve water flow to affected areas,” the Municipality confirmed.

Areas impacted by the current water supply issues include Queensburgh, Shallcross, Klaarwater, Chatsworth, Umlazi, Folweni, and Westville.

Residents are urged to use water sparingly, and the Municipality has apologized for any inconvenience caused.
