Durban – Constable Joshua Minenhle Makhaye, 27, has been charged in connection with the theft of over 270 bank cards, some of which were linked to the 2021 riots. Makhaye was found in possession of these cards after a vehicle he was allegedly associated with was hijacked and involved in a tragic accident that killed an 11-year-old boy.
According to reports, the vehicle had been hijacked prior to the fatal accident, and it was during the investigation that authorities uncovered Makhaye’s involvement in the theft of bank cards. A significant number of these cards, including those allegedly stolen during the widespread looting in July 2021, were found in his possession.
One investigator described the scale of the discovery as “alarming.” The officer stated, “Not only was Constable Makhaye found with hundreds of cards, but some of them were linked to the looting that devastated communities in 2021.” This revelation has heightened concerns about the potential exploitation of the chaos during the riots for criminal gain by individuals in positions of trust.
In light of these findings, Makhaye has been charged with theft and being in possession of stolen property. His actions have raised serious questions about the integrity of law enforcement, especially as he held the position of a police constable at the time of the incident.
Community members have expressed outrage and disappointment over the case. One resident shared, “It’s a betrayal when someone meant to serve and protect us is implicated in something so horrific.” The death of the 11-year-old in the hijacked vehicle incident has further intensified the public’s demand for justice.
As the case unfolds, many are watching closely, hoping that the full extent of the alleged corruption and theft will come to light, and justice will be served.
