The Director General of Public Works and Infrastructure, Sifiso Mdakane, recently paid an emotional visit to his former school, Isibonelo High. His visit brought back memories while allowing him to witness firsthand the current state of the school’s infrastructure, which has seen little improvement over the years.
Mdakane walked through the school premises, interacting with the principal Mr Ntuli and the school cooks and observing the condition of the buildings. Although Isibonelo High prides itself on academic excellence and maintains a clean environment, the infrastructure paints a different picture. “The doors and windows, essential components of any school, are in a poor state,” he remarked. He also emphasized the urgency of upgrading the worn-out windows, adding, “An improved environment would greatly support a more conducive learning atmosphere.”
While acknowledging the efforts of the school staff to keep the premises clean, Mdakane pointed out that “maintenance and infrastructure support are vital to the school’s development.” He stressed that “a clean environment alone is insufficient for modern learners, who need comprehensive facilities to foster their education.” The Director General expressed his distress, stating, “It pains me to see students studying in these conditions. A well-maintained school environment should inspire motivation and pride in learners.”
Mdakane’s visit underscored the need for investment in schools like Isibonelo High, and there is hope among the school community that these issues will soon receive the attention they deserve. Reports suggest that improvements are being considered to ensure future generations can study in an environment that supports their learning journey.
