Five people were shot and killed during a gun battle with police in KwaZulu-Natal in the early hours of Monday morning.
The incident unfolded in Chatsworth, south of Durban, where police exchanged gunfire with the suspects.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the operation, saying officers remain on the scene.
“More details will follow,” he said.
Previous incidents of police shootouts
This latest shootout comes just weeks after two men suspected of murdering a police officer were gunned down in Inanda.
On 12 August 2025, officers tracked down the pair, who were also linked to attempted murder and a series of house and armed robberies. According to police, they came under fire after identifying themselves and ordering the suspects to open a door at a house in the Maplazini area. The suspects were fatally wounded in the exchange.
Police said at the time that the arrests followed intelligence-led operations aimed at cracking down on violent crime in the province.
This is a developing story.
