The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Rev. Thulasizwe Buthelezi, as part of his personal relationships he is building with communities, engaged with the people of Mondlo in the Abaqulusi Local Municipality. This was done under the leadership of Inkosi Nyanda, of the Hlahlindlela Traditional Council.
Other key service delivery concerns that the community and the MEC discussed included water availability. “We have tasked officials from the department to work together with the Zululand District to bring this community water from nearby schemes,” said MEC Buthelezi. His response underscored the moves continually being made by the department to iron out kinks in infrastructure and address the needs of all citizens.
The MEC further spoke about the local economic development initiatives, which are community empowerments to assist rural communities. “We are going to procure A-frame tents, chairs, and mobile fridges to be given to Amakhosi and Ondlunkulu for their benefit,” he said, showing that the government has planned to support the local leaders and traditional authorities with resources that can bring them some income.
Inkosi Nyanda appreciated the engagement and said that this was indeed a milestone for the community. “We are grateful to the MEC for honouring the invitation from isizwe.” He added that this was a breakthrough event in which residents of this area would benefit, particularly addressing the long-time challenges.
This is in direct relation to the government and the community, which testifies to the commitment of the province to facilitate collaboration with traditional leadership in pursuit of improved service delivery and rural development.
