The head of the police force in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has stated that the police are pleased with the situation regarding election violence as the general election continues. This comes after a press conference held at Hoy Park in eThekwini.

The police team dealt with areas that were potentially volatile.

“Durban is doing very well; we were worried that we might have to deal with violence. Areas we visited include Hammarsdale, Ntshange, KwaMashu, Phoenix, Mlazi, and Tongaat. In all these areas, we observed that voters turned out in large numbers, especially at KwaMashu Hostel; it seems they are not in a hurry to leave,” said Mkhwanazi.

The police will continue to monitor election violence until Sunday,June 2, when the IEC is expected to officially announce the results of the general election.
