Bonjaneni, Northern Drakensberg – The Rural Inclusion & Sustainability Film Festival (RISFF) is back for its third edition on November 29-30, 2024. Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of Bonjaneni, near Bergville, the festival continues its mission to amplify rural voices while tackling pressing themes like sustainability, economic inclusion, and climate action in tourism.
Amplifying Rural Voices Through Film
RISFF is not just another film festival. It stands apart by shining a spotlight on rural communities and their stories. This year’s event will feature films by talented young filmmakers from nearby villages, such as Inguquko, uWatela, and Umsubathi. The festival will also showcase international documentaries like Rhino Man, which delves into the impact of rhino poaching, and Hidden In Plain Sight, a critical look at inequalities in the tourism industry.
Festival organizer Gugu Sithole highlighted the event’s purpose: “We are excited that this festival is touching so many lives through key themes like environmental conservation and the urgent issue of climate change.”
Sithole explained further, “Our programming is intentionally aimed at empowering rural communities that are often excluded from economic opportunities and access to vital information.”
Gender, Climate, and Activism
The festival’s timing coincides with the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Organizers aim to raise awareness about the links between climate change and gender-based violence.
“The festival will highlight the escalating issue of gender-based violence, often exacerbated by the effects of climate change, such as dwindling economic opportunities and increased frustration,” Sithole said.
By connecting these issues, RISFF fosters important conversations about the challenges faced by rural communities and potential solutions.
Supported by Strong Partnerships
This year’s RISFF is made possible with support from the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, and the Bonjaneni community. Organized by the Glamping Adventures Foundation, the festival has become a beacon of hope and empowerment for rural areas.
“This is more than a film festival; it’s a movement to bring attention to critical issues and celebrate the strength and creativity of rural communities,” Sithole concluded.
With its blend of local and international storytelling, RISFF promises to inspire and inform, drawing attention to vital issues while celebrating the power of rural voices.
