A security guard at a supermarket in Tongaat allegedly stabbed to death a theft suspect who had initially evaded arrest by outrunning him on Tuesday.

The fatal stabbing happened on Gopalall Hurbans Road in the Tongaat CBD – KZN on Wednesday morning.

“Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was called out to the scene by a passerby at approximately 11:06 after the 34-year-old male collapsed in a parking lot,” spokesperson Prem Balram told TellitallSA.

“On arrival, Reaction Officers and RUSA Medics discovered the man in a prone position in a parking lot. Heahad sustained a single stab wound to his chest and was declared deceased,” added Balram.

It was alleged that the deceased was a drug addict.

“On Tuesday, he allegedly stole a bottle of oil from a supermarket. He was pursued by the Security Officer who was patrolling the road outside the store but managed to evade arrest.

On the next day, the same officer spotted and confronted the suspect.

“The two began arguing when the Security Guard produced a knife and stabbed him. The injured male fled but collapsed approximately 50 metres away,” Prem said.

The accused proceeded to the Tongaat SAPS and handed himself over to Police.
