EThekwini Municipality has expressed deep shock and concern following the alleged attempted murder of a Water and Sanitation Unit employee in uMlazi F Section earlier today, December 24.
The employee, who was attending to a reservoir as part of efforts to address the ongoing water curtailment by uMngeni-uThukela Water, was shot while on duty. The attack occurred when the vehicle he and a colleague were traveling in was sprayed with bullets.
The injured employee was rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently receiving medical care.
Acting Head of Water and Sanitation, Msizi Shabalala, strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a serious hindrance to service delivery. “It becomes difficult and unsafe for our employees to attend to water challenges experienced by communities when they are being attacked. We wish our injured employee a speedy recovery and hope that the police will apprehend the perpetrators soon,” he said.
Shabalala emphasized the importance of creating a safe environment for municipal workers and called on the police to investigate the incident thoroughly. He also urged the public to collaborate with the Municipality in protecting infrastructure and ensuring smooth service delivery.
