The City of eThekwini hosted a vibrant cancer awareness fun run/walk today, October 27, along the scenic Durban beachfront, with over 1,000 participants—mostly youth—coming together to support the Youth Cancer Awareness Campaign. The event was organized by the eThekwini Youth Development Office and aimed to promote a healthier lifestyle while raising awareness around cancer, honoring those who are fighting or have been affected by the disease.

Chairperson of the Governance and Human Capital Committee, Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala, applauded eThekwini residents for their strong turnout. “It was very encouraging to see the number of participants who came out in support of this good initiative,” said Councillor Madlala. “I am a big advocate of people going for cancer screenings and other health tests to be able to take the appropriate measures to ensure a long and healthy life.”

Councillor Madlala emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups and urged participants to visit healthcare centres for screenings, noting that early detection is crucial in the fight against cancer.

Nkosikhona ‘Uzzi’ Mpungose, director of Youth Interactive and a prominent civil society leader, shared his sentiments on the significance of the event. “We are gathered here to show support and love to people who are infected and affected by cancer,” said Mpungose. He further highlighted that October is recognized as Cancer Awareness Month, underscoring the importance of consistent support beyond this event.

In addition to today’s fun run/walk, Youth Interactive has organized post-event activities. “We’ll be supporting awareness initiatives here in eThekwini,” Mpungose explained. “We will start at Cato Manor Clinic and also have a cancer awareness program specifically for men at Addington Hospital.”

The event left participants feeling inspired and more informed about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection. The Youth Cancer Awareness Campaign proved to be not just a run, but a meaningful stride toward a healthier, cancer-aware community in eThekwini.
