The EThekwini Municipality is making significant strides in combatting the issue of problem buildings in Durban’s inner city. Through proactive measures and innovative strategies, approximately 32 buildings are slated for rehabilitation under the repair and recovery program.

Since the inception of the Problem Building Division in 2019, 29 buildings have already undergone successful revitalization, rejuvenating areas such as the Mahatma Gandhi Precinct and the City Ports Precinct. These efforts encompass painting, repairs, cleaning, and securing identified structures, accompanied by vibrant murals that enhance the urban landscape.

EThekwini City Manager Musa Mbhele underscored the pivotal role of the Problem Buildings Division in inner-city revitalization, “Emphasizing the prevention of further vandalism and unauthorized occupation. This initiative extends beyond the inner city to prioritize areas in outer regions.” said Mbhele

To incentivize property owners, the municipality offers various benefits, including the building wrap incentive, permitting third-party advertising in designated zones. Revenue generated from advertising can be reinvested in building renovations and municipal debt settlement. Moreover, fee reductions and accelerated application processing serve to foster compliance and participation in the program.
