Mxolisi Kaunda has announced his resignation as the Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, effective immediately. Kaunda made the announcement at a press conference at City Hall in Durban today.

“I thank the people of eThekwini for their support and cooperation during my tenure, which has been marked by numerous challenges since 2019,” Kaunda said.

During his leadership, the municipality faced various difficulties, including the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the July 2021 unrest, and the destruction of infrastructure. Kaunda has been the Mayor of eThekwini since 2019 and currently he is going to be the member of the National Council of Provinces in the Western Cape province being deployed by the African National Congress.
