The Mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality Cllr Lindile Nhaca addressed the community at the Open Street Event on King Shaka Street,KwaDukuza on Thursday June 13,emphasizing the need for climate action and sustainability. The event, held as part of World Environment Day, aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote behavioral change.
The Mayor highlighted the importance of adapting to a warming world, citing the recent flooding disasters in 2022 and 2023 as a wake-up call. The city’s new priority is to address extreme flooding events by improving infrastructure, engaging the public, and prioritizing ecosystem rehabilitation projects.
The Open Streets initiative aims to create shared spaces that symbolize respect, human dignity, social cohesion, and environmental sustainability.
“Let us work together in building a climate-smart city that is sustainable, equitable, and safe for all, ” Nhaca said.
Nhaca encouraged citizens to embrace the concept and work together towards building a climate-smart city.
