The KwaDukuza Municipality Council has approved a R23 million budget to upgrade two main taxi ranks in the area. The KwaDukuza CBD and Ballito Taxi Ranks will receive modern safety features, ablution facilities, and taxi queuing aisles with lifted roofs.

“The municipality’s dedication to improving transportation services and infrastructure reflects its ongoing commitment to promoting development progress in the region,” said KwaDukuza Municipality Mayor Cllr Lindi Nhaca, speaking at the sod-turning ceremony.

Cllr Nhaca said the construction of the KwaDukuza Taxi Rank is expected to be completed in eight months while the work at the Ballito’s rank will take about five months.

“I can guarantee that this is a taxi rank that belongs to us… We will make sure we will protect the constructor until the construction is over. This is a dream come true to us as taxi operators that finally we will have such a huge structure with a shelter,” said Nhlanhla Lepalo, Chairman of the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association.

The upgrades aim to enhance transportation infrastructure and improve facilities for commuters and taxi operators. The project includes renovations, improvements, and modernization efforts to cater to the growing needs of commuters and taxi operators in the region.

Commuters have welcomed the upgrades, expecting improved safety and comfort. “We will certainly feel comfortable and safe at this taxi rank now. We will no longer run for cover when it rains or when it’s hot. The ablution facilities will also help us,” said Themba Mpungose, a commuter.
