In a bold move to reinvigorate KwaZulu-Natal’s football prowess, newly appointed MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mntomuhle Khawula has outlined ambitious plans following Richards Bay Football Club’s thrilling 4-0 victory over Baroka FC. Celebrating their retention in the Premier Soccer League, Khawula hailed the Natal Rich Boys for securing KZN’s quota of four PSL teams, promising a season filled with intense local derbies and high-stakes matches.

Khawula highlighted the broader implications of KZN’s representation in the PSL, foreseeing a boost in sport tourism and enhanced social cohesion through football. Despite concerns over recent team performances, he expressed optimism about a resurgence in the upcoming season. “We have historically set high standards,” Khawula remarked, pledging robust support to elevate KZN teams back to their former glory.

Looking ahead, Khawula underscored the importance of a robust school sports system and strengthened partnerships with sport academies to nurture local talent. “The KZN Premier’s Cup will kick-start our efforts, providing a crucial platform for preseason preparations,” he added confidently.

With Khawula’s vision poised to transform KZN football, the province anticipates a rejuvenated surge in competitiveness, aiming to reclaim its position at the forefront of South African football.
