The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has condemned the government’s decision to extend the license renewal period for drivers’ licenses.
OUTA’s CEO, Wayne Duvenage, expressed disappointment in the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s (RTMC) report, which revealed that many licenses have been renewed despite vision-related problems.
“We are shocked that the RTMC has extended the license renewal period from five to 10 years, despite evidence that many drivers have vision problems. In their report, they acknowledge that many drivers have vision problems, yet they extend the renewal period, which is a serious concern,” Duvenage said. He added that in other countries, licenses are renewed every two years, citing India as an example.
It is worth noting that in 2022, the former Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, announced that drivers’ licenses would be renewed for eight years, instead of five.
