The election of the Mayor of eThekwini Municipality has been postponed indefinitely. This decision was made before the council meeting held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban.

Speaking to the media, Council Speaker Thabani Nyawose confirmed that the election was supposed to take place today, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it had to be postponed.

“We couldn’t get hold of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to preside over the election, and we didn’t want to proceed without their presence. Another reason is that the Mantshi faction is disputing the election, and we don’t want any disruptions during today’s meeting,” Nyawose said.

He added that new plans will be made to ensure the election takes place in July.
